(re: skream - "traitor") -- much ado about offbeat

Post by rekall » Wed Oct 04, 2006 11:54 am

mate, bad bad tune this one.
but i gotta say i'm inna bit of a tizzy figuring where to drop it.

i suppose that's the point.

it would seem the obvious choice to pick out the very first hi hat as the start of the measure, but that first snare/clap after it becomes too distant if you go that route.

i'm finding what makes the most sense is to give a careful listen to the 2nd of 3 quick run of hi hats and using that as the 'one'. puts the snare in the right place but other stuff still seems out of place.

again, i suppose that's the point.

in any case, fuckin' a breakin the boundaries of strict riddim structure and going for the gusto.
BOH.

alternatively ignoring the first big bass wibblewobble and cueing on the first bassdrum right after it (also featuring the 2nd bass bobble) works just as well.

quite a puzzle, i'm thoroughly enjoying it.

nope it's the first biggo bass that's the "one" and the first bassdrum is the "two".

highpass filtered bits are all kinds of playing with my head as to the downbeat, upbeat.

talkin' to myself here. i've got problems, clearly

What the fuck are you wittering on about?

I'm fascinated to see this post, it's certainly pushing the avant-garde thread ideal. Who is Olli Jones btw?
Hmm....

So this is basically a thread about where the beat comes in is it? Might be best to pop out and see some people, yeah?

Sorry, I'm sure those Skream posters, and the Skream fanboy annual, and probably your Skream shrine and those rather creepy Photoshopped pictures that you tinker with featuring you and him at the poodle parlour acting like best buddies give you all the lowdown on Olly Thingy that you need to keep you informed and make you feel like you're on first name terms so that when you're standing outside his house, staring with that unnerving glint in your eye hoping to catch a glimpse, it doesn't feel quite so twisted and wrong.

But it is. Very, very wrong.

If any of the above isn't true for whatever reason do just point out the errors.

i just looked up his name on discogs, cuz i wanted to know and i have nuff respect for 'im.

as for the tune, yes you can 'do what's expected' but it's just one of the really funky very sparsely-percussive tunes where you can totally get away with aligning it differently (especially if you're mixing not-dubstep with it, electro minimal techno whatever) -- it's good fun.

well you know the dubstep microcosm is still relatively smallish (though clearly not for long!)
