practicality, simple.
I mean look when everyone had portable CD players, now look, no one has them.
And also, as a good as tape sounds and as fun as they are, i think we only like them for the nostalgia really. If they were still around we wouldn't want them around, but because they're not, that makes us want them...... if that makes any sense :S
Don't get me wrong, i love tapes.

Hey, I do! I haven't able to load songs onto my cheap-ass mp3 player since I accidentally washed it, so now I use my old CD player to listen to burned mp3 compilations.

I use my CD player alot because itunes is completely shit.
When I get an mp3 player that doesnt require that piece of shit program to use I'll stop.

When I try to upload all my music into it, the thing just fucking crashes, I cant exit it and have to reboot my entire computer, and then as soon as it starts up again (which if you're unlucky enough, it will do as soon as you log on) it crashes again.
Its just a pain in the arse. You cant turn off that pointless gapless playback thing and that can cause all sorts of problems etc. etc.

Um, there are plenty you can just plug into your usb port and drag and drop the music on... iPods aren't the only mp3 players.

...I'm fairly sure it was a hostile takeover by the technology industry...I'll tell you why I think so..
Does anyone remeber how when CD's first came out, one of the biggest selling points (beyond the skip through to tunes and the "indestructability" of them) was that they only cost like $.60 to produce..
So they were supposed to be better AND cheaper then cassettes - I swear to you that the instant all the record chains ceased to carry cassettes - BOOM! price went to $12- then almost immediatly to $15 - than another 2 years or so it was up to $18...
I have always been sceptical of any device that has the capacity to lock your media within..I think we may loose alot of great music from this particular "digital" time phase because digital files do not keep well in the attic...nor do they trade well at the farmers market..nah mean..
I try to burn most of my digital files to cd, but you know how it goes - download a bunch and burn a few for the car, but the others stay out there in digital space..
I know I sound negative and paranoid...but I am sometimes

haha you analogue fanboys you! I'll concede that vinyl is superior to CDs and mp3s, but tapes? honestly? they really are undeniably shit.
They sound awful and last as long as a 14 year old in bed with Liv Tyler (and make even more of a mess when they break)

what fucks me off more, is people going around listening to tape players trying to be cool and retro when they could easily pick up a cheap Mp3 player for £20.

Poor quality, they get worse over time, you've got to change sides rewind.... they were the middle man between vinyl and cd, it's just nobody realised cd was just the middle man between vinyl and mp3/digital...

I always wondered why mini discs failed so badly, I would have thought that they would be the next natural progression from CDs...perhaps it was the MP3 age killing it in its infancy but i would have thought mini disc would have taken over CDs in the same was CDs killed cassette tapes.
