I can't seem to keep my sub at the same volume when moving through different notes. I'm only working in one octave and as far as normal bass goes that works fine. but when it comes to sub, settings that work fine on some notes just go fucking mental on others..

I've tried compressors, limiters, and all that malarkey on it, but I can't record the bass at similar volumes to get the whole bass line recorded in one go. I'm using novation bass station so its not the synths fault, it's just me being incompetent.

any help would be sweet.

for a pure sub bass, it depends on acoustics and shit for how loud a certain frequency sounds

higher pitched sub notes wont be as loud as those real "rumbler" notes you get down lower

Chances are they are perfectly loud but just not well represented on your set up. Check the notes with a frequency analyser and I bet the "quieter" notes are just as strong visually.

I used to think if you couldn't hear a bass note it didn't exist but if you put them on big systems they come out and muddy up the mix.

Nah I know what he means... Even when I manually write in the bass notes, the mixer in acid will tell me it's at -12 for the first note, and -9 for the second, and all the way up to -7 for the last or whatever (just an example) makes no sense really... pretty annoying. I end up bouncing the sub bass and wave hammering it, which is a pain.

its not that some notes are too quite to be heard, its that some come out proper loud and it's fucking annoying having to keep ducking off the volume for different notes.

there must be an easier way?

I've started low passing my sub, i know i know there aren't any harmonics
but....

set low enough and it starts to attenuate the notes that you play higher up, i normally play between the low notes and high notes while adjusting the filter till they all sound reasonably the same. If there are any odd notes that I can't get with this then I'll cut em slightly with a notch filter.

Oh, and on the subject of sub-bass....

Whenever I listen to 'Need You' by Darkstar I always wonder how he got every note in that bassline to stand out and resonate so much.

I know for a fact that certain notes sound louder in my room, but that tune just sounds so even and perfect on every note.

My only guess would be some kind of deadly accurate additive EQ on every frequency that each note represents....

thats one mad tune

distort (thereby limiting, as when you distort you cut off level above a certain threshold) aggressively and then low pass to get rid of the fizz. i always dig bitcrushing for this particular effect-- blatantly ripping off danny byrd btw.
