Sampling bass Patches - how many notes to sample?

When sampling bass patches from a synth how many notes is it best to sample? Currently I'm doing about 4 or 5 notes (only one velocity layer) around the lower registers spaced a 4th apart - but I'm wondering if I need to do that many. What have other people found?

If you're intent on using that particular patch, why not just sample say every note C1 to C2 or maybe even C3? - no need to transpose any notes, so ultimately better quality bass!

Depends on two things Imo.
Firstly, if you have any kind of modulation on the sound, it will change rate as you play back at different pitches.
Secondly, if you have the HD space, there really isn't any reason not to sample every note across two octaves.
Finally, you could settle on sampling every third/fourth note. Listeners begin to discern formant shifts playing back samples any higher than three or four notes from their original pitch.
