I've been listening to Timeless by Goldie a lot, and trying to look into how he produced it. I know they used a lot of old Akai timestretching, as well as an annoying clue he gave in an interview (something along the lines of 'I used a simple effect but in a way you'd never think of').
I'm just wondering if there are any plug-ins that recreate that old way of timestretching, to save chopping and duplicating the samples by hand?

The oldest skool method I can think of involves chopping your audio into 1/128th segments and simply putting extra segments into your sequencer to create the stretch. The more of each segment you place into the sequencer, the longer the stretch time becomes.

To smooth the sound, pop your audio through a chorus or reverb to cover up the chops. If you wanted to have a completely dry sound, and be completely anal about it, for every start and end point on each segment, apply a quick fade in or out. this envelope will cover up the clicks from chopping at points other than a zero crossing. Some software like Adobe Audition allow people to fix transients so that the audio starts and finishes on a zero crossing everytime.

Another related method is to create pitch shifting with a delay unit. Try passing your audio through a delay unit whilst modulating the delay time live. as you extend the delay time, the audio drops in pitch, and as you shorten the delay time, the audio raises in pitch. this is easily done using the DLL delay in Reason.

Thanks guys! Yeah I've done the chopping into tiny bits way, that's the sound I'm after but it takes forever to do it. Soundforge is great but a little too good at timestretching!
I'll try the Akaizer, wish I had an mpc to load things into...

I warp the vocal in Ableton. Very limited to how long you can stretch it tho. Easy to do

You can do it in reason with the NNXT inside a combinator. I've also made a reaktor plugin to do it. Basically any sampler where you can modulate loop points will do it.

Goldie produced very little of his own early work. The man behind most of it was Rob Playford.

My 2 fave tracks off Timeless are A Sense Of Rage VIP, awesome atmospheric track, and Jah The 7th Seal. The beats are amazing.
