Is it just me being out of the london loop and have never come across the phrase "croydon techno" me thinks someone may be trying to coin a phrase.

Let's face it, anyone called Gervase de Wilde who hasn't changed their name by deed poll is unlikely to be into anything that doesn't involve tying up infant boys from the local peasant village and extracting their blood through a rectum-mounted straw into his ball-bag.

you guys are being harsh

he made dubstep out to be something new, big, growing and did not fail to play up the importance of big sound system

also:

Fuelled by internet forums and a community spirit that contrasts starkly with the individualism of grime, the music looks set to overcome its problematic name and any residual trainspotting tendencies on its journey to national and international recognition.

also he didn't say dubstep was white man's reggae, he said at its worst its white man's reggae. which is true

actually at its worst is when spacey half steppers are boring, reggae or not

Parson - the voice of reason. I think given a lot of the current players, some of the best stuff might be white man's reggae too.

Don't know anyone under 40 that reads the Telegraph, so I don't think it's going to cause too many problems. If the local Conservative club's outgunning the DMZ bus on the way to Leeds though, I'll be impressed/horrified/bemused.

Oh and about the Croydon techno thing - weren't Out of the Blue records from there. Had a few nice tunes of their's but I always thought of it as more housey, but quite dark. Really good stuff if you can find any of it, although it was a few years back. Pressures of Life was really good, must have been around 2000 though so probably a parallel thing to Tempa and Big Apple.

I think I remember vauge references to croydon techno but that was back in the early days of skream, benga - the sort of pre-dmz/pre-halfstep sound. Haven't heard it for a while.

the croydon techno thing related to Plasticman circa the Grime 1 comp on Rephlex in about 2003/4. i think there's a thread on K Punk's blog from that era too.

shocking piece btw

"But picking apart these strands to make sense of its origins can make even trend-spotting music journalists furrow their brows in confusion."

with the above quote he's basically saying he hasn't done his research!

great photo though, glad they're going to the source on that one: Infinite!
