This is a topic thats been buggin me for a while so i thought i'd get it out for debate...

Too many tunes stay the same all the way through without switching up on the second or third drop. Obviously many do... Dark Matter by N-Type is an example of what i mean; The subtle switch on the second drop after the vocal sample is big!

BAR 9, who i can't get enough of, is bad for not switching up the tune; see tunes such as his remix of Kyza's 'Go' for example of what i'm trying to describe. I think that tune is heavy but needs some more inventive use of the structure to give it life past the opening salvo of face melting riddims.

This is not a dissin post, just a shout to all button pushers to make the most of the structure at hand to make tunes more interesting. If you see dubstep mix tapes every tune only gets played for about 1:30 before mixed out. Is that good or bad? Not sure...

Lol. When i first heard Lean Fd by Mala - the 2nd drop on that is so huge -at Fwd, there was only one name for my new label.

agree wit u, tracks that change as they play r the way fwd, then djs r more likely to let the track run past the 2nd drop

I feel bad for saying it, but i never listened past about a minute into the first drop on this tune until i read this.

Completely changed my view of the track. THIS IS WHY A GOOD 2ND DROP IS KEY!

Thing is though, at least for me when writing, I seem to work better from the first drop, build progression from the breakdown to the 2nd drop an it seems so much more explosive but sometimes I often think, "will people sit through this far of the track just to hear this part of it?" and often make the 2nd drop ive made the first and the first drop I made the second so often my 2nd drops are not as good as my firsts or I make a great first drop and can't top it for the 2nd so the 2nd is just a variation of the first

Least your honest! Is it really hard to come up with a second killer switch up? Im saying all this not from a producers point of view but a listeners, hoping to get some responses like yours and some from the industry heads on the subject.
Personally i like to listen to a whole tune, not just the first 'good' bit then change. 'Dark Matter' is nearly 7mins long and i don't want it to end! Maybe that style of more mellow/darker dub is easier to build subtle switches in... although look at What Did He Say by Skream... big rave tune that gets better and better as it goes!

OH man for sure, if I am not doing something made to make people dance like goons on the dance floor then its very easy to change the whole progression of a tune and just let it ride out and add as much progression and degression, switchups and key changes as I like! but when I am making something with a lot of explosive energy I find it terribly difficult to keep the same sort of mood but switch it up lots apart from variants of the of notes played on the bassline or different drum breaks.. but I do enjoy making a stupidly hype first drop and progress into a mellow 2nd drop from the break down so it caters for both audiences and is a joy to make then again - I ain't on a level of say skream or mala

Pendulum - Showdown (Excision Remix) exemplifies this for me.
The switchups, and little synth things that come in keep it rolling nicely. + The second drop is immense!

i like 2nd drops that change or build... just something different, hopefully MORE!!

i think dubstep songs that drop the same drop on the 2nd one, should always add a verse on the 2nd drop to give it some kick.. just my .02.

Pretty much every tune we make has a switch up on the 2nd drop, we generaly try an keep it so no two 16 bars are the same in each tune, even if its just a suttle change.

All about keepin things fresh.

I think this thread has a valid point, something I have been thinking about myself since the very beginning. I listen to dubstep in my living room 80% of the time, and then it bothers me.

But on the other hand, besides from being seperate artworks, meant to be listened to from intro to outro, a dubstep tune is also a instrument. A tool for the DJ and a part of a bigger work.

A rave is something else than abunch of tunes. It's also the flow, and sometimes these tunes (those repetetive ones with a boring second drop) works well in a set.
