hey guys im new to dubstep. ive been a house and techno producer for about 5 years and went to a rave last week and saw rusko and chase n status (yes i know there mainly d'n'b but saxon is alright) and fell in love with the whole dubstep thing.

anyway ive been making some dub but i dont have a sub when im producing (you dont really need one for house music). can anybody recomend a good sub and would i need another amp to power it

is a sub woofer absolutley mandatory or could i get away with not having one

Yeah you can get away with it... Depends what kinda dubstep you make really, if you're making something along the lines of Digital Mystikz' "Anti War Dub" you will probabaly need on to get a fuller picture of the sub tuning, but if you're making midrange wobble (eg mr chips, eastern jam) then it's probabaly not nescasery (sp?).
I know rusko doesn't use one as far as I know.
As for sub woofers, the KRK subs are pretty pokey, those are worth checking out.

What have you got monitor-wise already, and have you treated your room sufficiently?

im using reason and using 2 subtractors in a combinator one of the doing a wobble as i see you guys are calling it and the other is a sine wave on like the 2nd octave with out a wobble just going underneath the wobble.

i can only just hear the sine wave underneath the wobble but i know in my head its gonna be bassy

A sub would be benefitial, if you're using a sub under you wobs. I can see you appreciating it.

it's going to hinder your mixes more than help them by the sound of it

yeah i think your right. im gonna go buy a decent sub id need to use another output on a sound card aswell though if im not mistaken

I'd save your cash and invest in some really decent studio monitors. Then learn them inside out. IMO

Yea for production I would get monitors instead. A good pair of monitors shouldn't really need an external sub becuase if you learn them inside out you can get a good idea of what the sub is doing even if you cant fully hear it.

edit: I went off track making jokes again, I would be interested in a decent subwoofer for monitoring, room aint really treated but because of the shape parallel walls aint an issue, I also have a fuck loada sofas everywhere and a bed directly behind my listening position

well if rusko aint so good tell me where i should be looking then. like i said im new to the genre. i could tell you more than you ever needed to know about house and minimal techno just i know absolutley nothing about dubstep

forget the woofer dude producing is producing wether it be minimal or dubstep. If its aimed at the dance-floor then you already got that experience, and as you know there ain't no rules so just go wild

It's not that hes not good but say we came to you with the name of an overrated house producer who everyone wants to know how to get his sounds which to you aren't really that impressive given the vastness of the genre.

I think it's the whole "ruskos are teh mainstreamz = noes" from our side which is never cool from any genre but yeah you hear a name enough times its gonna piss you off just a tad

Might help - what are they made from?

both are made with a wooden frame

1 has foam inside I think

the other im not sure (quite heavy though if that helps)

Heavy/dense is good but it has to be an appropriate material. Most foam isn't any good for bass trapping as it doesn't allow air into it (closed cell). So it is acoustically opaque, so to speak
