which hard synth for writing and playing live?

ok firstly im a complete amateur- i love dubstep but ive never made any of my own so please dont ridicule me

ive seen lots of youtube videos on how to create dustep basslines on soft synths but ive never seen anyone use a hard synth to create them in the studio or use them in a live set (the only exception to DJs playing the finished track was a few guys with effects on bass guitars)

so im wondering if...
1. hard synths can be used to create wobbly dubstep bass for recording
2. hard synths can be used to play dubstep live
3. does anyone do either and what equipment do they use

also if anyone does use a hard synth to play dubstep in a live setting is the bass as powerful? keyboards usually go into the PA, not a bass amp and im wondering if it would sound shite?

i know that everyone uses on screen synths to create dubstep and when they play live they DJ instead of playing live instruments. i may seem to be doing everything wrong but im just interested and any help would be appreciated
x

1. yes
2. yes
3. hardware much like software is a personal (and expensive choice) so there is no one right answer or even near being just a couple

effectively your signal flow would be synth - mixing board - pa

Modular systems own all others!

You could also have your own mixer for doing your own effects/panning/levels etc that goes off to the main 'board. Depends if you have what kind of engineer you've got, if you've got got someone who's role is specifially to dub stuff up etc then you might not need/want that option

that and the convience factor of a lappy and a midi controller or a couple to control all the vst features on the fly
effectively the same thing as an analog modeling hard synth

its sounds the same, but no its not the same at all

the difference is you have to map all the midi stuff out yourself or let the computer guess with that automap stuff.

hardware is always the same in the sense that this knob does this and that knob does that- so you can use it with your eyes closed and work from muscle memory.

plus youll end up working with audio samples of yourself playing, which is what alot of people end up doing with midi anyway.

and the most important part : its more fun :D

if i had the space and the cash, id ditch most my plug ins.

i have both and mapping out midi to controls plugin wise is easy and you can even build a template easily so no headaches
