dj vs producer

just wandering what peoples thoughts would be....
I used to have the djing side down to a stage where i was almost ready to go and play out, just needed to build the library up a bit more.
However, then i got into producing and almost completely stopped practicing on the decks and now my mixing quality is way down compared to what it used to be. I guess i now consider myself an average producer and an average dj lol
What i was wandering is wether in peoples experience it is better to concentrate on one of the two first, to build reputation, spread your name ect and which one it would be...
cheers

always be producer first, DJ second
that way you can DJ your own tunes cos they're actually good

that's what I reckon

Yeah mate I just started dj'ing and even though I'm practising loads and getting good I'm trying to focus on producing again because thats why I got into it, to spin my own shit

that being said though
i do love the whole culture of collecting vinyl and showing your mates what you've got.
I can't afford to press my tunes to dubplate, and i'm sure as hell that no one else is gonna pay for me to get one xD

I think being a producer, for me, is much more interesting. Djing is fun, but ulitimately for me it does not have anywhere near the level of creativity or expression. IMO.
Also you will probably will be good at whatever you focus on....

I bought Ableton live and all my problems were solved, dj and producer at the same time, what a life

thanks for the feedback guys, really confirmed what i was thinking.
Haha... yeah ive used ableton before and it really feels like cheating... not saying its bad, saw gravious like a month or so ago and he played a mad set, but i guess my old hip hop days had too big an impact on me. "What is a dj if he cant scratch?"
get serato stapleface and keep buying only the best tunes on vinyl, best way to get a great collection plus mix your own tunes

Ohhh you cant beat reconstructing tunes to clips and mixing them on ableton with all the sections of your own tracks. Makes me smileeeeee just thinking

Learn to mix first imo. Nothing worse than seeing a producer trying to mix. (HI DUBSTEP!)

Was producing long before I started mixing, to me they are very seperate things, do both!
Sometimes I feel like a mix, and sometimes I feel like making music. I rarely feel like doing both.

I prefer making my own music as opposed to playing other peoples.

if you're a producer and you don't wanna learn to mix, use Traktor.
there's a sync button which actually does it for you pretty much haha

Producing first then live producing...

Yeah, for me too. Producer first LIVE producer second. I think a good producer can be a good dj too. Why? Because they both need rythm to do a good job. Ones you got that down it all comes down to technique.. Lucky for me i learn technical things REALLY quick
