Anyone on this?
My local blockbusters has a full wall now, and you actually have to really look for the new dvd's!
so just wondering if people are on it, do you see dvd dying out soon?
i was thinking we would go from dvd to files, and stop with the actual product, and just get stuff on a drive.
so yeh

Whilst Hollywood still makes bucketloads from boxed DVD/BluRay sales we won't see films going downloadable for a little while, I don't think...well, not to keep... streaming rentals are starting to get better.

Got a PS3, but not many Blu Rays... paid the extra for Planet Earth... it's fucking godlike in HD.

The difference in quality is negligible IMO, although HD films and TV looks fucking amazing which I don't really understand? I wouldn't waste my money on BR.

Whats the point?
I don't really care for quality to be honest.

Still have a CRT Tv and find the quality to be fine, none of this flatscreen shit.

there is deffiantely is a large difference in quality between blu-ray and standard dvd, however, you will need a HD T.V. to notice that difference.

If you love extremely good quality picture that is amazing to look at for the entire film, i would go for it. i personally am all about the best quality picture, and of course best quality sound

but like i said, only worth it if you have a nice big hd t.v.

Watching Planet Earth in 1080P is amazing. The crystal caves are some of the most beautiful places I have seen. I have to admit seeing all those cockroaches scurrying around the cavern floor was uncomfortable.

i haven't got on it yet and obviously working hmv i have seen whats on offer...

i just don't think it's worth getting anything other than special fx laden blockbusters or high def documentaries...

i have about 1,000 dvds and im not about to hunt down replacements for amazing films like dr strangelove & pi...not even blade runner tbh...that film looks best in it's original mastered form...that era of sci-fi is special to me due to it's beautiful grainy look....

and technically it's just not a big enough jump....FLAC and mp3 debate is similar...

I don't think there is a large difference. You can however notice the difference; although I don't think the transition is anything like VHS to DVD was. HD games and films downloaded off the net are amazing though, much better than xvid. Personally I think the format of hard copies of films is dying as streaming rich HD media becomes more the norm. Sky+ / HD and Virgin on Demand are the nails in the coffin. People of course will still like to own a copy of the actual product but why bother paying £15+ for it on BR when you can download it in HD for £2 (or free)?

Secondly the bigger the HD screen the bigger your room has to be as your viewing distance increases. Even a HD blue-ray film on a 52" HD TV looks shit a few feet away, you really need to be a good 15ft+ to get the optimum viewing.

Planet Earth is awesome. Period. Stuff like that makes the BBC licence fee worth every single penny.

I really don't like FLAC... 68MB for a VBR mp3 vs 250MB for FLAC, hmmm. I wonder which one I'll download

An interesting point to make is that most people will "compare" by putting a DVD into their BluRay player, which will most likely automatically try and upscale the DVD to HD resolution. I.e. it uses a bit of processing to play it at a higher resolution than your normal DVD player would.

The difference between a true standard definition DVD and a BluRay in 1080 is actually pretty noticeable... but, as with VHS, mainly in reverse. I didn't think DVD was that special until I watched a couple of old VHS movies....

The difference is storage space. A dual sided, dual layer DVD can hold 17 Gigs. A single sided, single layer Blu-Ray can hold 25. A single sided, dual layer Blu-Ray can hold 50 gigs. TDK has even built a working 200 gig prototype. 200 gigs on a laser disc is fucking incredible.

nice one for all the feedbacks on it.
im not really a huge movie fan, i do like the odd one enough to want to own it, but generally I am happy to watch em once or twice so owning movies has never really been that big on my collection lists.
but I do like to get TV Series. I can watch my favs for hours on end over and over, so in that sense Blu-Ray is pretty pointless as most tv shows arent even recorded in HD, is that right?

Yeah, lots of stuff available to download/stream in HD now. The BBC iPlayer streams some stuff in HD... looks fucking brilliant.
