ASR 10's are antiques and NOT very portable (but if you do buy one, I have plenty of drum kits for you)

I recommend an MPC

If you are an "in the box" producer, you should use something like Kontakt, EmulatorX2, etc...

get a laptop. Sampler, synths, drum machines, all in one. Plus you can play gigs on it, way better move for the money.

Dont get me wrong I would like to have an MPC to play with but from what I understand antique/oldskool samplers are more hassle than they are worth.

if your going to get a sampler, make a collection of it

find as many bargain bin shitty ones as you can

your bound to get glitches and malfunctions out of them which will yield great sounds

not sure what kinda experiences you are basing this advice on, but I honestly think you are misled

akai s100 - s5000 series are still awesome

Emu samplers are still legendary

but if you want a new hardware sampling solution under $1000, I am going to say that you cannot go wrong with an mpc 1000

why dont you use software? it was not long ago you was asking how do I make 'wobble', you sure you want a hardware sampler?

its entirely possible, thats what a sampler is. frankly it would be a nightmare on a s2000 (DH may disagree), 32 character screen, no waveform display, saving to disk, only 2 outputs, 10mb limit, need a mixer, etcetcetc... i used mine for years and years and while chopping eg an amen is possible, its a huge PITA.

to be honest mate, no disrespect, but a new tool prob wont help if youre learning, get a free pc sampler (eg shortcircuit) and sit and play with it for a few days, months, years... i can do in half an hour what took days literally on the akai.

the reason people like 'classic' boxes is the sound, not ease of use - if youre (from what i gather in this thread) still learning, then itll just make things more confusing TBH IMO.

10mb is the amount of memory in my Akai. It cn go up to 32mb. but unless you find an (obsolete) scsi card or zip drive etc, youre going to be loading from/saving to 1.44mb disks.

yea the 32 mb upgrade is cheap and it's pretty easy getting a scsi card. with wavelab or recycle 2.0 i have no problem managing my samples, but yea i backup to floppies
