i would say avoid the spliffs altogether. also, if you've not played in a club before, the hardest thing at first is to get used to a new setup, so try fucking with your home setup for a bit first - put your monitor on the other side or behind you, turn the decks through 90 degrees, etc etc, so stuff like that wouldn't be a total shock if you turned up and everything's different to what you're used to....

I was in exactly the same position a while ago, once you actually get behind the decks or in the little DJ booth, you feel proper safe behind there haha so that makes it less scary I thought. A few beers will help of course, but at the end of the day in my case it was a load of college/sixthformers and they weren't there to hear good mixing really, or even good music. My laptop crashed running serato, so I just quickly slapped on a vinyl and no one even noticed. So you'll be fine man, just enjoy yourself and play for yourself too.

It's just fucking annoying once you finish and some goon kid who can't mix and just plays chart music hops up and everyone's gone crazy cause he has put Lady Gaga on or something.

Good luck, let us know how it goes

Nothing anyone can say on here will make everything better.

Having a few drinks will help, but you'll be nervous regardless. However, a few tunes in after a few good mixes, you'll feel at home. My first few times playing out went just like that, you'll fall into the groove pretty quickly.

i would say drink 1-2 beers before and then concentrate on the mixing.
have some mixes between tunes in your mind you know that will work very well.
practice a lot! :)

after you finished your set: get wasted! :D

Go in with a game plan of what you want to play.
Having an idea of your programming will help give you more time to make sure you got those beats locked up as opposed to scrambling around shuffling through tunes trying to figure out what you want to play and then realizing you have little to no time to mix. Eventually you'll get to the point where you'll only need half a phrase to cue up and mix but early on in your progression give yourself plenty of time so you can be good & confident about what you're mixing. Good luck!

Play lots of loefah through the shitty PA system you will be most likely playing on.

Seriously though..
Pretty much know what your gonna mix, write it down even - but dont be afraid to change plans.

No one cares about how well you mix.

Look like your having fun, watch the croud.

As some peeps mentioned before - keep the head down for a bit (look up once in a while to see how the dance is going) and just mix away.

I think an important thing to remember though (IMO), is don't go out with a pre-rehearsed set - just go out and wing it based on crowd response. I rehearsed my first few when I wasn't so confident and ocne or twice the dance floor emptied a bit and there's no real way out if you go with a game plan and a set amount of records.

Once you get you first decent mix out and / or a good response from the crowd, you'll love it.

You'll be suprised how fast it goes, too - before you know it you're last record will be on and the next DJ will be stepping up.

Above all man, just remember that you're not going to get noticed on the back of your 6th form party, so no-one is goign to mind if you clang a mix or 2, so just try to enjoy it and have a couple of beers - just don't get wasted!!! I find 4-5 beers hits the mixing 'sweet spot'.

Hope that helps.

If you're playing vinyl you can always line up what you have in mind in your crate before you roll out. I primarily play CDs now and keeping track of what you played during a long set can often be tough when you have CDs scattered all over the booth. Especially after you've had a few :D
I miss playing out of a crate, it's sooooo much easier to keep things organized.

There's a good chance you will fuck up. I know I did

If you do have any issues, just don't let it get to your head and enjoy yourself. Mixing on a big system for the first time is a rush.
