I know there's been some topics about this but I want to know what people would recommend me.
I've been wanting to get a laptop or something for a couple of months now so i can take it out gigging and to college etc. and have been debating whether to get a laptop or a macbook.

programs i will use will be Reason 4 and Ableton Live and others like photoshop.


Say I have around a grand to spend but would prefer to spend less.
Would I be better off buying a MacBook Pro or a decent laptop around the same kinda spec?

I have a look at laptops that have a decent spec for about £600 but the same kind of thing in a macbook pro is about £1000+.

Is the extra money worth it?

if your looking to spend less than a grand dont bother with a macbook... cause they cost more than a grand...

i like my macbook, i think in the long term for most cases it would be worth the extra bones. macs are great for design programs like photoshop, adobe gives all their employes macs to work with...

im not a computer wizard so i cant really tell you much, just dont step on your laptop like i did

I say go for a Macbook - they cost a grand and you will save more money in the longrun b/c of their longer lifespan.

This way you can spend more time making music as opposed to troubleshooting, downloading service packs, and security updates.

Get the 13" Macbook Pro, not that much more than a grand and you get the firewire and sd card slot.

I love my Macbook and dont think I will ever willingly go back to Windows.

if you are not an idiot who downloads torrents and porn a thousand gigs a second than a pc laptop will last you a long time

if you have a decent cashflow buy a mac

but i sure dont so pc's are fine for me. 600 dollar laptop, 3 gig RAM, 180 gig HD, 18 inch wide, and dual core processor

the same in mac would run you triple the cost

buy an extra battery, dont run it 24/7 and you wont have to worry about it dying.

Judging by the answers here I'm drifting towards Macbook Pro.
Can you really run windows on them?

Yes, you can with Bootcamp - but really, why would you want to? I am too lazy and there is nothing I need that badly.

Just wondered if I would have to buy certain software in Mac versions. or would i be able to use my windows versions. I know some software has a version for each OS.

For Reason for example, you are paying for the license, so you should be fine to install it on a new Mac with the S/N. You may need to contact them, it depends on the protection scheme.

For what it's worth,

i saved 1000$ by buying a PC laptop instead of a similarly spec'd mac about 4-5 years ago...

A Macbook is $1,000 now...

A decent spec-ed PC Laptop is what? $700-800ish?

To me it's worth spending $200-300 to avoid Windows 7, constant virus, malware concerns, and the stupid security issues inherent in PC design.

But I am a Mac fanboy, take it with a grain of salt.

mac all day long imo.... i have a macbook atm but its too slow, got a new imac and allsort of new gear on the way, cannot wait...

I think its more of a stylized question than a functionality question.

I would consider the DAW you want to use, and the plug ins, then match it up to the best system you can get for the skrillah you have to drop on it.
