Grimey & Beautiful Vocalists?

this thread has nothing to do with the genre of Grime, which i generally don't enjoy so much...that said, i'm looking for vocalists, preferably female but if there are good male ones i'd be interested, that sing in a kind of grimey style.

My best example would be Billie Holiday.

Emma Pollock(the Various Production Remix of Limbs!!!)

some Ella Fitzgerald or Etta James

Bjork when she growls(& turns me on, lol)

the singers from the Sun Ra Arkestra

i'm looking for more of this! The genre doesnt matter so much as the beautiful grittiness of the voice. Any suggestions from around the world? Thanks in advance...

oh yes, thank you...the Ital Tek track is fucking nice & that Anneka girl is wonderful. That is exactly what i'm looking for...hope i can find more of her! I've never really liked Alice Russell much. Great voice but the style isnt my favorite. The Mr Scruff track is prolly my fav of hers.

anyway...all suggestions are welcome...thanks!

i say the girls from hijak - tears and whoever did the vocals on current value's remix of oceanlab's clear blue water, i think its a different singer than on the original. but really fits electronica and drum 'n bass yet oh-so-pretty vocals.

i'll check both tracks, thanks...

anyone know any vocalists outside of the dubstep genre?

i'm trying to do two things with this information...use it in my own mixes of course & also open that door of sound for a friend who has an amazing classically trained voice but has never ventured into any sort of grimey or dirty or i guess you could say primal sound. like the blues, you know? Strange Fruit & such...

anyway, many thanks for the suggestions :)

:o 'something like this' is exactly what you guys are currently doing! damn those are some really nice sounds on that page...the dnb style tracks are great and the jazzier smoother tunes are like a nice cross between NinjaTune & Blue Note! I would daresay that when i start using a vocalist in my live sets it will sound VERY much like this...even down to the saxophone that i also play! my music is a bit glitchier...fractured beats in with the clean ones...but all i can think upon listening is how dope a collaboration would be...will be in touch fo sho...

cool, hit us up for sure..
we could definitely do something fun.
we are working on an album right now so we have allot of new material in various stages of completion. mostly acid jazz, trip hop, dubstep, drum and bass type stuff.. o and we are not afraid of the big bad glitch :D
in fact if i am left unchecked i get a little crazy
