editing is a pain on both the microkorg and the micron
but if you can get a full fledged ion do it
me i have a micron and love it

ahh yah. i heard they can be kind of a pain to edit, but i guess that is something id just have to get used to. id like to get an ion but i will be travelling so i was thinking of picking up something a little more portable.

well if you have a usb midi interface with the micron there is a freeware app you can use to edit patches right from your comp
here's a demo of some of the patches i've made on my micron
http://www.sendspace.com/file/x36kdh

the one bad thing i will say about the micron is patch management since you have to delete them patch by patch which is a pain and since it has only the one main control knob that tends to wear out and get wonky on some of the units, so if you do get one get an extended warranty
also have seen the keys break on some of the demo units we've had at work
guess i got lucky and got one of the good ones

the microkorg is nice besides the midget sized keys and has alot more dance oriented presets already in the banks

it all depends what you want out of the synth for what types of sounds
both are extremely versatile for the price points, but the microns filterbank is what won me over in the end

and the micron has all the same features as the ion and more just you don't have all the knobs and controllers to edit parameters

for a wee bit more not so portable lately i've been playing with the roland sh-101 which is true analog and fun as hell, only downside is it only has e oscs

christ i sound like i'm still on the sales floor at work

Micron wins

i own both and i would say the micron without a shadow of a doubt. the microkorg was way more popular than the micron which kind of suprises me though. although both are a pain to program, the micron more-so because it only has one fucking knob. but like previously mentioned there is a freeware program available. i haven't used that though.

maybe an electribe?

thanks for all the suggestions i think im gunna go with the micron. i like the way the korg looks more and am tempted by its ability to be battery powered but i want versatility and i have a feeling the micron is better for that plus it has full size keys. as for pain in the ass programming its just something i'll get used to i guess.

hmmm lemme find out if we can ship to canada if so might be a bit cheaper to get it from the states or make a trip across the border to a guitar center
def get a usb midi interface too and like i said spring for the extended performance guarantee if you get it from guitar center
and join this yahoo group http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/alesis-ion/
loads of free patches and soft and knowledge base

and to whoever said the microkorg is more popular yeah it is i think that's just mainly in the dance/hip hop scene due to the presets and so many noobs to synthesis

i like my microKorg's synth capabilities. I hate my microKorg's keyboard size. Don't buy one

solution would be to use a midi keyboard with it but it would be nice to have it all in one

yea but sitting in front of a computer does not exactly make being creative easy, i used to think hardware was lame, but now im getting really sick of looking at a screen while making music
