Help with 1210's

So set up Digital's 1210s and having problems with mono/stereo.

One of the decks sound perfect stereo sound but the other only seems to be coming out mono.

I thought it may depend on the record but having played same record on both decks the problem is still there!

Its well doing my head in. Any suggestions?

Is sound in both channels, right and left, or have you lost one? Check all connections, the needle etc.

hey i have a problem as well...

on one deck, sometimes i get a hum when the ground is screwed in, so i have to unplug it. then a few minutes later, i'll get the hum again (as you'd expect) and i have to plug the ground back in. no rhyme or reason.

anyone know anything about electricity?

you might be getting a ground loop or interference. satellite dishes, refrigerators, fans, tv's...all are a nightmare for 1200's.

try a power conditioner like this:

or you can buy isolation cables at a radio shack or electronics store:

Yeah getting sound through and the connections are fine. When listening it just sounds a quieter.

I know its mono because I can see the monitoring on my computer.

so if recording a mix one deck is louder and will switch between stereo and mono.

???

getting well confused!

I've got another question and no answer to the original exceot maybe it's a mixer problem?

My question:
The output from my decks to mixer to amp to speakers is fine. However, when I try to use the record output from my mixer to record to my PC the sound is fine on the left deck, but when I mix to the right one the recorded sound is really quiet...

Like this:

Image

First part is a track off the left deck, then mixed into the right deck, then back to the left for the 3rd track. All sound the same from the speakers.

Mixer fucked?

the original problem sounds like it might be the cartridge/needle, try swapping em over and see if the problem travels

Do you think this might course a problem?

This sounds like a similiar problem because I run the decks through my sound to hear through monitors.

Same as, its the right deck thats the problem

its probably not a good idea to have yr speakers right in front of yr decks, if you turn em up thatll defo cause a loop cos youll be able to hear em through yr needles.. but i doubt thats causin yr right hand deck to go mono, it just wont help..

Only when you need to type,

but the problem sounds like the cartridge contacts are dirty on the deck that's quiet. Unscrew the cartridge, use a clean cloth or pencil eraser and clean the 4 little metal contacts, then try it again.n Or just switch em like unlikely said.

hum is usually because of groundloop. you can avoid it by puttin decks+mixer+computer to same extension cable!

thanks for that seckle. i'll start by giving those isolation cables a go.

speakers right next to your cartridges is never a good look. remember that the sl1200 platter is a magnet, and your speakers are a magnet too. make sure your mixer's grounded. that set up looks like one big groundloop. space things out.

exactly. try plugging your speakers into a different outlet. if you ram them all into the same strip box, it's going to make everything hum like crazy.

yep.
that's what i'd say.

if sound equipment is goin to differnt parts of the ring main (house wiring) then u get a ground loop.
that's what the term "ground loop" refers to. i think.

also, physical position relative to interference-causing stuff like monitors (vdu) can make a difference.
that's what i thought when i saw that photo,
but that's the other chap, izzit? with the mono problem.

dunno about that, the two channels (l & r) must be coupled somewhere. either touching wires or stylus weirdness.

hmm, if u use the same record, is the dodgy deck half as loud as the other?
cos that would probly mean that one channel (l or r) is connected to both outputs (l & r) somehow.

have u swapped which inputs the decks are going to?
if nothing changes, the problem is @ the mixer.
if it changes, then the problem is "before" the mixer.
in the latter case, try swapping the cartridges and follow the same reasoning.
at least then u'll kno where this weird problem is happening.

fushimi, your mixer has an internal problem probably. the rec-out needs a little repair.
workaround = send main out (the good one) to the pc and use direct monitoring from yr sound card.

Bedward,

Yeah I've tried same record with both decks and problem is still there so going to have a look at the needles.

Bowzer,

they are rokit 6, there very loud and very bassy. So if you get a couple of 8's and a sub your gonna have enough bass to rattle a mansion!

What I would say is mount them properly or put them on some acoustic foam underneath cause they rattle!

I tracked a similar mono only from one deck problem eventually to an intermittently dodgy phono connection with the mixer.

As already said speakers on same surface as decks can be picked up by the needles.

Good luck.
