Quick Question on Bass

Right, gonna skip the "sorry for the noob question" formality, even though me saying I was gonna' skip it probably took up more time, but anyway.

I'm just wondering about Bass production in cubase. When you set out to make your bass sound, like the pointers in the production bible describe, do all the tutorials assume you have already obtained a basic bass sound from a sample? Also, is the bass manipulation done generally in the DAW itself or plugins; like for example could you add all your effects etc just through the DAW (cubase in particular) or does this require another plugin or program...
