Cubase question
Okay so I recently got Cubase 4 LE in a package with an audio interface.
The problem with cubase 4 LE is that it doesn't have any good drum synths built in.
I still got loads of dubstep drum samples stored on my PC, which I used in FL , but how do I load these in Cubase and how do I get them to work?
(I only worked with drum synths before in Cubase)
If anyone could tell me, I'd love it

Re: Cubase question
Why do you want to load them into Cubase? You can write the beats much easier and faster on FL and then export them into Cubase for mixing etc etc. Which version of FL is it? If its FL8 you would be nuts to go anywhere else to make the initial beats!!Reignz wrote:Okay so I recently got Cubase 4 LE in a package with an audio interface.

You can import the drum samples into the audio pool in Cubase (select "audio" at the top and then select "open pool window" then use the import feature to import the samples you need) and build the beat up a hit at a time on the screen.... however this takes ages and gets old very very very quickly.
Peace
[EDIT] You can also load the drum hits into a sampler like Kontakt and use your midi keyboard to play the individual hits....

Yeah you can either import them into audio tracks and write your beats that way (made much easier if you use mediabay but I'm not sure if that's included in LE), this way gives you nice control working with layering, enveloping and lining up transients but is slightly more fiddly to program and a pain in the arse to pitch. Or you can use a sampler like kontakt or more specific drum sampler like battery (there are free alternatives out there to but I don't know them) then program them in the piano roll/drum editor which it nicer if you've got multi sampled drums of if you want to modulate pitch/parameters with the velocity.
Quick question, which seems fairly related, saves clogging up with new posts.
If you use kontakt as a sampler for your drums, say you multi sampled different drums onto a midi controller. (eg snare on C2 BassD on D2 etc etc). When you go to create your drum track the drums will occupy only one track on cubase yes?
Does this mean that when editing your seperate drum beats, say you wanted to compress your BD, is this done with groups on kontakt? because the midi compressor on cubase, apart from looking shit, would compress the entire drum track no?
Thanks for the help...

Yeah man you'll need to either use seperate groups or seperate parts for different drums.
Personally I prefer to use different parts (or instruments within the 1 sampler) in kontakt as it's just the way i've always worked and it's easy to route the outputs, then use seperate effects on different parts.
You'll need to switch on multiple outputs if you're using it in cubase 4+, which can be done by clicking the little arow symbol next to the Kontakt instance in your vst instruments panel (F11 shortcut).
That said I don't use kontakt or samplers at all for making drums (mainly for layering bass parts, but even this not so much anymore). The awesome thing about cubase is the audio editing, I do all the drums in the arrange page.
