Cyrusfx - KTUH dark/funk/crunk Mix

Post by cyrusfx » Tue Jul 21, 2009 6:45 pm

Wat up all, just played this mix on the University of Hawaii's radio station last weekend and got a warm reception.

Am trying to spread the sounds around on the island, as dubstep has nowhere near met its full potential here, so I apologize if a few of the tunes are a bit elementary for the real heads.

The mix starts deep, gets funky and goes for crunk towards the end. The second half is definitely for those who don't mind vocals over their dubstep. Aloha from HI & the 808 state

Oh yup! I'm glad Hawaii is giving dubstep a warm welcome. When I was living their the dnb scene was rough. Toss some good ragga style dubs and the islands will cAtch on to the filthy stuff in no time. I was always wondering if Hawaii was gonna accept this. I should visit soon. But I digress, spread the vibes and don't sleep.

Yeah... you'd be pleased to know that the DnB scene has a firm foothold in Honolulu. Took about 8 years but its not going away any time soon.

Dubstep... not so much, but that's gonna change once more people come to their senses and the sound spreads locally. Its definitely got a foothold. I agree that locals would prolly be more prone to like the reggae or ragga influenced stuff.

Most people just want to hear Top 40 or easy listening music - they are extending their vacation to their earholes. Most clubs are worried about losing the tourist dollar and stick with the same lame format, playing tracks that make any genero consumerbot feel at home.

But there are a few brave owners & promoters that are helping to spread the audio rennaissance, to which I give props; now if only their work wasn't falling on such deaf/uninterested ears...

It didn't take that long. I was the first DnB DJ out there. Used to go by Spex. I started spinning DnB in '95 at Afterdark before forming Trinity Crew. By '97, we had our own weekly DnB nite at Formula 660 and we were bring stateside DnB DJs out there. By '98 other crews were forming, like Bassment Addicts. DnB was getting exposure at almost every club and party, not to mention its other weekly event, Bassline Lounge.

I like the first tracks in your set. The first one is yours, huh? Nice! Did they let you mix live? I mixed for one of G-Spots shows on KTUH back in '97 or '98 and they made me pre-record all my shit.

Anyone else out there in Hawaii spinning Dubstep? Paul (BassX) still doin' his thing with the dnb?

Hey thanks, glad you dig it... Yeah Paul is still here, super nice guy, killer DJ. There's a place that opened in Wikes called Lotus that hosted AudioLab for like 3 years, but recently they are back in Chinatown.

And yeah I've actually only been here for about 4.5 years so I'm sure dnb was around long before me.. I was just going by what I've heard...

They had a twice-monthly dubstep night going at Indigo's believe it or not, but I think it only lasted for a couple months (we'll see what happens in August).

I still talk to Johnny Mac, though its been a little while. As far as I know, he's not spinning out at all anymore. I'm sure Dean is still spinning DnB. He was just coming on the scene when I was leaving, back in '99. Were you around for the Alliance parties? Alliance started as my going away party, but James took it to another level after I left. I still talk to James at least a few times a week.

I heard they tore The Wave down. 1739 still around? I need to make a trip back to the islands. I think the last time I was out there was to play one of Jason Mora's parties back around 2000. Heard it's changed a lot since then. I'd like to check it out.

Yes, they did tear the Wave down, it was a sad day. They were gonna build a new high rise there but that's been put on hold or something, so now its just this big empty, ugly lot.

Never heard of 1739, must have been before my time. Bar 35 and the 39 Hotel are still running strong. Everywhere in Wikes has changed its name pretty much, except Kelly O' Neals & Moose's.

Hawaii dubstep shows

Post by cyrusfx » Thu Oct 08, 2009 11:06 pm

If any y'all gonna be on da rock (Oahu) next Saturday the 17th, I'm gonna be spinning a dubstep set at Bar 35 in Chinatown, with a homegrown MC (Riseup) doing his thing over dubstep in the back.
