Following on from that interesting Reznor piece, I'm interested to know how people in this little niche get hold of their tunes (i'm talking specifically about dubstep here). Honest answers to the poll please (obviously you will get slated if you actually own up to illegally downloading stuff!).

There should be an "all 3" option which didn't add itself to the poll for some reason.

Mostly vinyl, but the odd 320 is downloaded usually from juno.

Vinyl mostly and the odd itunes song purchase.

I clicked 'just vinyl', but also alot free 320s from forums/blogs.

I like my music with me all the time, so I'll always have a digital copy.

I used to use Shareaza (free torrents) but since my system restore i haven't bothered reinstalling because

a) it was unreliable and slow
b) i felt like a tnuc for getting music that way

So now it's just vinyl and iTunes, unless there's a giveaway on getdarker/zshare and the like.

purchase digital most of the time unless it comes out months after the vinyl if at all
dl illegally if i just want say 1 tune from a 12" or a couple from an lp and it's not available digitally period or in a reasonable ammount of time from the initial vinyl release, which in an ideal world i'd purchase when it finally comes out digitally, but half the time by then it's something that has no play left in it

I spent so much on vinyl over the years the odd illegal download doesnt make me feel guilty. I still spend at least 100 quid a month on vinyl but would never bother paying for a digital file when I only want to have the vinyl, the only tracks I have downloaded have been tracks I already own, or tracks I would/will buy on sight if I saw the vinyl version.

I buy most of my music on vinyl but occasionally download the odd file via Beatport if its not available on wax.

I get a few promos of various labels as well, rarely dowload stuff illegally but have done it a couple of time in the past.

I buy albums and compilations on CD and individual tracks on MP3 / FLAC. I've got no interest in being a DJ so it makes more sense to have everything compatible / playlist-able.

I realise this probably makes mean outcast (in the dubstep community) but vinyl takes up too much space in my house already - I bought a hell of a lot of it in the 90s!

Being digital does mean that I can only get hold of stuff available on digital formats which means I sometimes miss out.

I only download illegally if it's either something from years ago I own on vinyl or to "try before I buy" (which I do rarely these days as you can listen to most things online).

I've found if i download an mp3 I forget about it, it just gets lost in between all the music on my iTunes and i forget about it - but if i have the physical product I always remember it!

dubstep wise im pretty mucj 99% vinyl w/ a couple CD heres or exclusive mp3s (ie sonic boom UK) or maybe buy a 320 if the record is out of press but it available digitally.


i dont do illegal downloads of dubstep because our scene is small, and both the label & artists deserve my support

yeah... i resort to mp3s cos I can't afford loads of vinyl - every now and then I will buy vinyl if the release blows me away

i started on just vinyl, but have decided to buy a CDJ eventually. i plan to pay for my digital tracks, but i've just downloaded the Silkie CD and don't plan on paying for it. i have one of the bad LPs and don't plan on paying return shipping on it. i guess we can call my 320 rip illegal?
