Question about synths & bass in Reason

Right I'm sure there is a simpler way of doing things with synth/basslines than the technique I'm using now of duplicating the synths and changing their rate: this way doesn't seem to 'flow' as much as the synths I hear in dubstep. I'm sure there is a way to change the rate etc. on just one synth without having to duplicate them - but I could be wrong.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about (way the synth varies in rate)

Also, there's also this tutorial video where the synth seems to build up even though he's using the same notes on the same synth (unfortunately doesn't show you how to do that bit):
