THE 13TH BIG NIGHT @ CARGO, THU 20TH AUGUST, 6PM-1AM
The Big Night is a series of music events in honour and support of one of the most influential, inspiring and socially transforming magazines of all time - The Big Issue. Prepare for a big monthly concoction of our favourite exhibitors, buskers, new talent and certified legends.
Previous and forthcoming collaborations include Basement Jaxx, Trojan Sound System, Adrian Sherwood, The King Blues, The Noisettes, The Levellers, Alabama 3, Reverend and the Makers, Gentle Mystics, The Urban Voodoo Machine, Congo Natty, Noémie, Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee, United Vibrations and many others that we recognize for reasons other than fashion, gimmicks and marketability. All artists perform and exhibit for the love, with profits going to The Big Issue and their commendable initiatives that make our society stronger.
This month we present a rib shaking journey through ska, reggae, dub, jungle and dubstep. Pioneers of these scenes such as TROJAN SOUND SYSTEM, ADRIAN SHERWOOD, AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE, CONGO NATTY and BROTHER CULTURE have gripped international audiences over the last 40 years, and London has provided the perfect breeding ground for the scene to thrive and develop.
Modern UK artists such as SANDMAN, REGGAE ROAST and MOUNT KIMBIE have fused the music of their forefathers with their own style. So what happens when we put them all on the same show?
A BIG Night!
************************************************************************************
TROJAN SOUND SYSTEM http://www.myspace.com/trojansoundsystem
London Sound System legends and high grade selectors Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad have been on the scene for 30 years, constantly pushing for new sounds and acts. It is fair to say that Trojan is one of the most important labels in the world. Legendary artists such as Lee Perry, Dr Alimantado, Tippa Irie, Dillinger, Dennis Alcapone, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs have all worked with the Sound System and now Trojan comes to Cargo to support the cause and tear the roof down.
CONGO NATTY http://www.myspace.com/congo_natty
ALL JUNGLISTS!! The man who spearheaded the movement, the revolutionary. He is responsible for mastering the marriage of dub basslines with hardcore beats – a true original junglist. From the first huge wave of the 1990s to modern dubstep 20 years later, the influence can be felt strongly. The fire is still burnin, and Congo Natty keeps the underground spirit alive.
ADRIAN SHERWOOD http://www.myspace.com/adrianmaxwellsherwood
Adrian is one of the most respected producers in the world, and his mighty On-U Sound label has been going strong for 30 years. Adrian has been responsible for producing a huge range of artists, including Lee Perry, Primal Scream, Depeche Mode, Junior Delgado, Queens of the Stone Age, Dub Syndicate, African Head Charge, Asian Dub Foundation, Shane McGowan, Sinead O Connor, Mark Stewart and The Moody Boyz to name just a few. His recent solo albums ‘Never Trust a Hippy’ and ‘Becoming a Cliche’ have fused global knowledge with his trademark dub tip, and he will be bringing some of that magic to Cargo for an insane live show.
DRUMS OF DEFIANCE http://www.myspace.com/officialafricanheadcharge
Drums of Defiance are the UK residents of African Head Charge. Headed by Bonjo Iyanbinghi Noah, African Head Charge are one of the biggest acts to emerge from the On-U label. It’s a hypnotic, psychedelic dub trip that has been encapsulating the world for almost 30 years. Its timeless, because of its ancient and mystical properties.
BROTHER CULTURE http://www.myspace.com/brotherculture
Brother Culture has been tearin up many a mic since 1982, in over 50 countries. He is one of the finest vocalists this side of the globe. Having worked with The Prodigy, Aswad, On-U Sound, Trojan and countless others, it is clear that the energy and presence of Mr Culture delves deep, spittin fire with every breath.
REGGAE ROAST http://www.myspace.com/reggaeroast
Reggae Roast has been running nights in London for almost 2 years. Founders Exel and Moodie started the night in a pub in Kentish Town, and has steadily built up a reputation as being one of the most vibrant monthly reggae events in London. With a regular and loyal following. REGGAE ROAST attracts people of all ages, a varied crowd of music enthusiasts with one thing in common - a love of Reggae music and positive vibes.
SANDMAN http://www.myspace.com/thelucidmovement
Sandman began his musical career at the helm of UK Hip-Hop super crew Underground Alliance (UNDALI), helping to launch the careers of artists such as Skrein, Stig of The Dump, DJ Moodie and many others. His vocal range and production skills has led him to work alongside some of the scene’s most influential acts including Skinnyman, Task Force and Foreign Beggars, and recently dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood, Reverend and the Makers and Asian Dub Foundation, after a standout appearance on their new album “Punkara”.
MOUNT KIMBIE http://www.myspace.com/mountkimbie
Hotflush Recordings presents a brand new production duo that eludes classification: Mount Kimbie. Based in London, they have developed a truly unique sound whose experimental rhythms lend themselves to the fringes of dubstep, wonky and hip hop, but ooze with emotion and echoing ambient soundscapes that take the listener to an entirely different place. Tonight Matthew, we (Kai and Dom) are...Mount Kimbie!
