I think that by the time of the later work you've become a victim of your own success; the subject matter owes more to the self-referential clique of the art world whose patronage you clearly enjoy than the raw emotion expressed in the earlier piece. Like so many talented artists the adroitness of expression is lost when the realisation of their own place within the canon dawns and the pressure to emulate their younger selves stunts future creativity. on this premise i bid £1.04 for the argos piece but was automatically bettered. art has been forever ripped from the people and turned into a commodity by an elite who judge aesthetic value in monetary terms. perhaps i'll steal a copy of the inevitable postcard reproduction in a few years time.
