BOXING - Marquez v Pacquaio II, this saturday night !

Post by joenicedj » Mon Mar 10, 2008 3:13 pm

Does anyone remember THIS POST? Does anyone remember their epic battle from nearly 4 years ago? This rematch has been a long time in the making.....and i will be getting this on PPV. I have to.

Marquez -- showed all the heart of a champion by earning a draw after 3 1st round knockdowns.

Pacquiao -- showed that he couldn't finish an opponent that was ready to go. The last 10 round of the fight were a complete waste. Additionally, he was labeled as a "one-handed" fighter. If you look at the first fight from the second round on -- Marquez made the decision to not get hit with the right hand. Strategy worked.

Now -- the real question is: WHO WINS THE REMATCH?
Let's look at what's transpired over the past 4 years.

Pacquiao -- of his 8 wins since the Marquez battle, 3 wins have come against the other dominant fighters south of the welterweight division....Erik Morales (twice) and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Marquez -- of his 7 fights, he's lost to Chris John (who?). he's also beaten Barrera and his last fight was dominant performance against Rocky Juarez.

Pacquiao -- the most violent fighter in the sport. He's a Tazmanian devil with 10 oz gloves. Marquez -- the most fundamentally sound fighter in the sport. Styles always make fights. We've seen it before -- we'll see it again.

If will defeats skill, Pacquiao wins. If skill conquers will, Marquez will earn the victory. National pride is on the line -- Philippines vs Mexico. Furthermore, each fighter's legacy is at stake. If Pacquiao wins, he will have defeated [arguably] the three best Mexican fighters of the past decade (Barrera, Morales, JM Marquez). If Marquez wins, he reaches a new level of superstardom in the sport of boxing.

I've seen several of the fights from each fighter since their 1st match in May 2004. Call me crazy -- but, i really don't think Marquez has improved. He's essentially the same fighter and he's 34 years old. Now -- that's not a young 34 years old...that's 34 years with a lot of mileage. Pacquiao has improved his jab and he's 5 years younger than his foe.

I think Pacquiao wins this fight -- and for some reason, i don't think a third will happen. I don't see scorecards in the 115 - 113 range. I can see a couple 118 - 110 scorecards. I think Pacman wins easily.

I will try and check it - embarassingly not heard of these 2 though!

Did anyone see the David Haye v Enzo Maccinarelli fight? I can't wait to see Haye move up to Heavyweight and shake it up.

yes!
their first fight was something else. i will never forget that first round. three savage straight lefts from pacquiao rendered marquez bloodied, confused, and three knockdowns behind on the score cards. showing the heart of a warrior, marquez managed to survive...and was able to regain his composure by the third round. from that point on, it was a technical shutout for marquez as he successfully evaded pacquiao's left and connected with numerous powershots......the double left hook and straight right being infamous foils against southpaws.

joe, as always, your assessment is on point. marquez is essentially the same fighter he was in their first contest, however with an added four years of mileage. to his advanatage, he is very skilled and dangerous with both hands. he also has great stamina from his high altitude training. i have yet to see marquez show fatigue in the ring.

pacquiao's style breeds excitement. his devastating left can ruin lives. while working with trainer freddie roach, pacquiao has been looking to dispell criticism that he is a one-dimensional fighter. this is due largely in part to the first fight where marquez exposed pacquiao's dependence on his straight left. taking a closer look, pacquiao has a tendency to overcommit when throwing his left. that's to say he thrusts all of his weight forward when throwing his left similar to that of a pitcher throwing a fastball.

ask manny steward, ask buddy mcgirt, fundamentally this is a nightmare. why? because this leaves pacquiao completely off balance and open to any number of counter punches. marquez, in their first fight, was able to exploit this weakness and control pacquiao for most of the fight.

i think this begs the question: will pacquiao make the same mistake on saturday?

four years have passed and i must agree with the resident boxing, dubplate, and r&b expert, joe nice, that pacquiao has improved. he has developed a solid jab and a formidable right hook. he also seems more conscious of his balance as evidenced by his most recent win over future hall of famer, marco antonio barrera. that being said, his bread and butter is still the straight left.

logic tells me that pacquiao will win a unanimous decision similar to that of his fight against barrera.

HOWEVER...
my pick is completely contrarion.
MARQUEZ TKO 7
8) 8) 8)

as per david haye.
i regret missing his dethroning of cruiserweight kingpin jm mormeck as it seemed to be a pretty exciting fight. i did catch his second round knock out of enzo maccccaarrriinnnnnellllli (sp?) but due the fight's five minute duration, i feel that havent seen enough of him to formulate a solid opinion. it would be nice to see a new face in the heavyweight mix. but does haye have the neccesary tools to compete with the top heavyweights? we have yet to see.

your thoughts on the heavyweight division?
marquez/vazquez III?

Fight of the year -- seriously.

For the uninitiated -- This is Rafael Marquez -- Juan's younger brother. Unbelievable -- havent seen anything that violent since Corrales - Castillo I.

That fight -- might deserve its own post -- my goodness.

Yikes -- shows what I know.

Well -- Pacquiao won....but it wasn't the blowout that i predicted.

Infact, I think this fight was another draw. Sure, Marquez got knocked down in the third -- but in my opinion, he won enough rounds to even it up.

I also said that i didn't see scorecards in the 115 - 113 range.

Here were the final scorecards:
Tom Miller ; 114-113 ; Pacquiao.
Duane Ford ; 115-112 ; Pacquiao.
Jerry Roth ; 115-112 ; Marquez.

The fight was a split decision -- with a knockdown! That doesn't happen often....infact, i can't remember the last time that happened. Then again, 4 years ago, we all were saying that we couldn't remember a fighter getting knocked down 3 times in the first round and eventually earning a draw......

Let's look at the scorecards if Marquez remains vertical for a full 12....remember, Pacquiao gets an extra point for knocking down Marquez; therefore, a 10 - 8 round.

Tom Miller ; 114-114 ; DRAW
Duane Ford ; 115-113 ; Pacquiao.
Jerry Roth ; 116-112 ; Marquez.

When these big fights occur, a few news outlets/organizations (ESPN, AP, Yahoo! Sports) will send their own reporters to judge the fight for their readers. Each of them had the fight for Marquez. 114 - 113

Here's the telling statistic -- CompuBox.

Pacquiao landed 157 of 619 punches (25 percent).
Marquez landed 172 of 511 punches (34 percent).

Pacquiao threw 108 more punches than Marquez and landed 15 less.

According to a post-fight interview, Pacquiao isnt fighter Marquez a third time -- he's moving up to 135.

We'll see. If enough money is thrown at Pacquiao (10 million or more), a third installment happens.

it has to.
