Dabbler - Mix Nine and a Half Step (Dubstep/DnB crossover)

Posted: Tue Sep 23, 2008 1:34 am
by dabbler
Three years in the making/collecting and it's finally done. Half Step DnB, Half Tempo Drum and Bass, whatever you want to call it, here is a mix of all tracks alike in that they aren't the usual DnB and a fair number of them are obviously influenced by/have influenced Dubstep.

Let me know what you think (even if you don't like it). My goal for this mix was to try to showcase the range of 'One Drop' Drum And Bass that I have found so far. (for those who have no clue what I'm talking about - it means the tunes below basically have half the snares of 'normal' DnB)

Please feel free to repost this anywhere you think people may enjoy it!

I REALLY enjoyed this mix, right up my alley.

thought "28. Quadra "Air Guitar" (DUB)" was called "Desperado", at least it is on the album I have.

anyways AWESOME mix!

wow, why did I sleep on this one?

absolutely wicked selection, didn't know there were so many of such tunes around, big up! some of them sound like hip-hop (half 180 is 90 innit), but that's all good, I love it!

might recommend some more to you, maybe for some future mix showcasing this kind of stuff

defo check Parson - he's been experimenting with steppy tunes in 172 bpm, see this thread - http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=29589
there is a lot of love for those tracks and it's absolutely deserved imo. unreleased stuff but you can always get in touch with the producer on this forum

Fanu did a halftime dnb tune recently, it's called Homefree and will be on his forthcoming album, wicked stuff - http://fanumusic.com/audio/homefree.mp3

this one might be quite hard to get unless it's released :) Pinch - Pepper Spray - http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=27380

there is a forgotten experimental tune by Jonny L - Turn Up The Bass (he released it in 2005 as Mr. L) http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/se ... MRL002&S=b
not your "usual" dnb i'd say. never heard anyone playing it though :(

Lynx - Disco Dodo, although not halfstep, but in terms of "bass power wins big time over breakbeats" is the standard but everyone is playing the tune already so whatever... but there is more of his tunes that are different and bass driven, can't wait for his album. check out http://www.myspace.com/stevelynx

also Calibre has got some interesting dubby bass driven dnb tunes, not sure if they are halfstep or just minimal, but anyway :)

good luck with future collection, for me this is one of the most exciting crossovers in dnb.

I've been thinking about doing a mix in the same vein. Definitely going to give this one a listen; respect.

Good to see you on here. I remember you from back in the day. I've thrown down both "Hard Times" and your "We Have Xplosive" remix a number of times at my residencies here. What are you making these days?

wow, thanks for all the kind words and huge props for the recommendations! it's easy to miss out many of this style tracks, tho the pinch tune was already on my radar. I'm up to just over 100 tracks of stuff like this, quite a few of which I really enjoy but just didn't feel they suited the mix.

been getting into the studio again recently (after a LONG hiatus) and have started some stuff with Daega Soundsystem, all sorts of tempo but not dubstep really. got a good half step ting about half done with them, sstay tuned I will post a clip when it's ready :)

I think Toasty/Toastyboy is breakstep (140 bpm). Serious talent anyway.
